Required Materials

  1. Free SVG Files:
    • Download from any website.
    • Requires a free account.
    • Comes in a ZIP folder that needs to be unzipped before use.
  2. Cardstock:
    • Multiple colors for the eagle, stars, and stripes.
  3. Vellum, Tracing Paper, or Translucent Material:
    • Used behind the cutout shapes on the lantern for diffused lighting.
  4. Submersible LED Lights or Fairy Lights:
    • Used to illuminate the lantern. Select lights that fit inside.
  5. Cricut Machine (or similar cutting machine):
    • For cutting the SVG designs.
  6. Glue:
    • Recommended: Barely Art Glue (or similar glue that doesn’t wrinkle).
  7. Foam Squares:
    • For layering and creating 3D effects.

Important Notes

  • Dimensions: The SVG file should load at 12 inches wide and 18 inches tall in Cricut Design Space to ensure the light fits inside correctly. If it doesn’t, adjust the size.
  • Vellum Pieces:
    • These should be cut from translucent material to diffuse light evenly across the lantern windows.
    • If vellum or tracing paper is unavailable, acetate can be used, although light diffusion will be reduced.
  • Cutting Considerations:
    • Use settings like “Vellum,” “Light Cardstock with Less Pressure,” or “Copy Paper” in Cricut Design Space, depending on your material. Trial and error may be needed based on thickness.
  • Assembly Guidance:
    • Be careful when inserting pieces into slots to avoid bending or tearing the cardstock.
    • Apply glue delicately to avoid spreading into visible areas.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the SVG File

  1. Download the free SVG from any website.
    Unzip the downloaded ZIP folder.
  2. Import the SVG into Cricut Design Space:
    • Open Cricut Design Space.
    • Start a new project → Click “Upload.”
    • Select the file from the 01-Cricut-Version folder in the unzipped SVG folder.
  3. Ensure the design loads at the correct size: 12 inches wide by 18 inches tall.
    • If not, resize to these dimensions.
  4. Delete the green guide box included in the design:
    • Click on the design → Press “Ungroup.”
    • Select the green box → Click “Delete.”

Step 2: Cutting the Pieces

  1. Prepare all the design layers for cutting. These include:
    • Cardstock pieces for the eagle, stripes, and structure.
    • Vellum or tracing paper pieces for the window panels (6 pieces).
  2. Load the cardstock and vellum into the Cricut machine.
  3. For the vellum:
    • Use the “Vellum” setting in Cricut Design Space (or experiment with other settings for your material).
  4. Cut all pieces following the machine prompts.

Step 3: Assemble the Window Panels with Vellum

  1. Turn the window panels (cardstock) upside down.
  2. Glue the vellum pieces onto the backside of the panels:
    • Ensure the triangle cutout side of the vellum aligns with the flat tab of the panel.
    • Avoid putting glue into the tab sections (since the vellum does not cover these areas).
    • Apply glue around the edges (leaving a slight gap) and in between the cutout shapes for stronger adhesion.
  3. Gently press the vellum onto the panel without smudging glue into visible areas.
  4. Repeat for all six panels and set them aside to dry.

Step 4: Assemble the Eagle Decoration

  1. Begin by building up the layers for the eagle decoration:
    • Eagle Wings:
      • Turn the layer upside down and add foam squares to the back.
      • Place foam squares in key areas (head, wings).
      • Line it up carefully and press onto the base layer.
    • Stripes:
      • Glue the blue stripe on the left side and the red stripe on the right side.
    • Head Layers:
      • Start with the yellow base layer.
      • Add foam squares to the back for dimension.
      • Layer remaining pieces (black, white, blue, gray) with glue.
      • Use foam squares for the last piece (the beak).

Step 5: Build the Lantern Structure

  1. Arrange the three main structure pieces:
    • Piece 1: The decorated eagle panel.
    • Piece 2: The panel with a slit in the top and bottom.
    • Piece 3: The panel with large slits from top and bottom.
  2. Connect the panels:
    • Slide Piece 2 into Piece 1 using the slits.
    • Insert Piece 3 into both assembled pieces.
  3. Add the circular stabilizer pieces:
    • Insert the smaller circle into the top of the lantern using the slits.
    • Gently push the larger circle into the base of the lantern.
    • Wiggle and adjust as needed to secure the circles without damaging the cardstock.

Step 6: Insert the Window Panels

  1. Attach the six window panels one at a time:
    • Insert the top tab into the top slit of the lantern.
    • Insert the bottom tab into the base slit.
    • Ensure all panels alternate between red and blue for a patriotic effect.
  2. Leave one panel (preferably a red one) unassembled to allow light insertion.

Step 7: Add Lights and Final Assembly

  1. Use submersible LED lights or fairy lights:
    • Place the light(s) inside the lantern before attaching the final panel.
  2. Complete assembly by securing the final panel into place.

Step 8: Display Your Lantern!

  1. Turn on the LED lights to illuminate the lantern.
  2. Use the remote control (if applicable) to set the light color—red, white, blue, or a color-changing mode.
  3. Enjoy your glowing, patriotic eagle lantern as part of your 4th of July decor!
