How To Make:

- Fold a 10 × 10 piece of orange paper in half.
- Use a pencil to draw a leaf outline along the folded paper.
- Give the leaf a pointed or slightly jagged shape inspired by autumn leaves such as maple or oak leaves.
- Cut carefully along the pencil line.
- Open the folded paper to reveal the full leaf.
The fold gives you a symmetrical leaf without needing to draw both sides separately. If the outline is uneven, make small corrections with the scissors rather than trying to redraw the entire shape.
Repeat the process to create several leaves. Use red, orange, and yellow paper to give the crown a mixture of autumn colors.
Add the Leaf Veins
The leaves become much more recognizable once their vein details are drawn.
Using a black marker, draw one main vein from the bottom toward the pointed end of each leaf. Then add shorter angled lines branching away from the center.
You do not need every leaf to look exactly the same. Slight differences in the vein patterns can make the finished crown feel more handmade and lively.
If you want stronger color contrast, add a little orange marker or crayon detail to some leaves instead of using black for every line.
Prepare the Hat Band
Take the yellow paper strip and turn it into the face of the hat.
Before adding the leaves, mark the front center of the band. This small step gives you a clear reference point for the face and helps you decide where the leafy sections should begin.
Draw two dots for the eyes and a curved smile in the center of the band with a black marker. Add orange marker or crayon to the cheeks for a simple blush.
Keeping this face area clear is useful during assembly. If leaves are glued randomly around the band first, they can cover the face or make the front look heavier on one side. With the center marked, you can place the leaves around the sides and back while keeping the expression easy to see.
Turn the Strip Into a Wearable Hat
Wrap the yellow strip around the wearer’s head to check whether it reaches comfortably around.
The 29 × 5 strip is the starting size from the instructions, but the length may need to change depending on who will wear the hat. If the strip is not long enough to meet around the head, attach another small strip to extend it.
Once the length is suitable, apply glue to one end and join it to the other end to form a ring.
Allow the glued area to hold securely before moving on to the leaves. The band needs to stay together while the decorations are being attached.
Tip: If you are making the hat for a child, handle the scissors yourself or supervise closely while the leaves and band are being cut.
Attach the Leaves Around the Hat
Now bring the leaves and yellow band together.
- Apply glue to the bottom portion of a leaf.
- Attach it to the inside of the yellow paper ring.
- Position the leaf so that most of it rises above the top edge of the band.
- Continue adding leaves around the ring.
- Keep the face area at the front visible as you work around the sides and back.
Attaching the leaves from the inside gives the hat its leafy crown effect. You can slightly overlap some leaves or leave small spaces between them, depending on the look you want.
As you add each leaf, check that it is firmly attached before moving to the next one. If a leaf begins to lift, add a little more glue to the bottom section and press it back into place.
