How to Make a Wrapped Gemstone Necklace
A wrapped crystal necklace is a unique way to celebrate the beauty of gemstones while turning them into wearable art. Whether it’s a beach stone or a special gem, wrapping it securely creates a stylish accessory you can wear proudly. These necklaces are great for gifting, adding a touch of nature to outfits, or simply keeping a meaningful stone close to you.
To make one, you don’t need a lot – just some waxed polyester or nylon thread, a flat stone, and a simple setup like a macramé board or even a clipboard. Wrapping the stone involves tying neat knots to form a snug pattern around it, securing the gemstone inside. The process can be calming and fun, as you build rhythm with the over-under knotting technique. To finish, seal the ends with a lighter to make it sturdy, and even add a loop for threading onto a cord. Once done, the wrapped crystal turns into a beautiful necklace ready to wear or gift.

Materials & Tools Needed:
- Stone/Gemstone:
- Use any flat stone or gemstone you like. Even stones from the beach work well.
- Waxed Polyester or Nylon Thread:
- Important: Do not use waxed cotton; it won’t melt for sealing.
- Can be purchased from Amazon or craft stores.
- Macramé Board (Optional):
- Helps with anchoring your threads. Alternatively, you can use a clipboard, tape the threads to a table, or ask someone to hold them for you.
- Scissors: For cutting the thread.
- Lighter: For melting and sealing thread ends.
- Needle: A needle with a large enough eye to thread your cord through.
Important Notes:
- Pre-select a gemstone of the appropriate size and shape for wrapping.
- Cut longer lengths of thread than you think you’ll need to avoid running out midway.
- Practice caution when working with the lighter to avoid burns.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Threads
- Cut Two Base Cords:
- Cut two medium-length pieces of waxed cord that will comfortably wrap around the stone.
- Anchor them securely (either onto a macramé board groove, clipboard, or with tape).
- Cut One Working Cord:
- Cut a single long piece of working thread, longer than you expect to need. This will be used for knotting.
Step 2: Start Knotting
- Tie First Knot:
- Create a loop in the working thread.
- Place the loop over the top of the base cords and push it underneath.
- Thread the working cord through the loop and pull to tighten. This creates the first knot.
- Begin the Knotting Pattern:
- Always work from the middle of the working thread:
- Knot 1: Over, under, through.
- Knot 2: Under, over, through.
- Always work from the middle of the working thread:
- Repeat the Knotting Pattern:
- Alternate the sequence:
- Over, under, through.
- Under, over, through.
- Continue this pattern until the knotted length is long enough to fit around your stone.
- Note: Adjust the knots as necessary so the piece snugly fits the width of your gemstone.
- Alternate the sequence:
Step 3: Wrap the Gemstone
- Remove from the Board:
- Take the piece off the macramé board when it’s as long as your stone’s circumference.
- Wrap Around the Stone:
- Place your gemstone in the center of the knotted thread section.
- Carefully wrap the knotted piece around the stone, ensuring it fits securely.
Step 4: Secure the Stone
- Tie a Secure Knot:
- Using the two base cords, tie a knot at the top of the wrapped stone.
- Use this trick:
- Wrap the cords around twice to hold the knot in place.
- Tighten the knot carefully while keeping the gemstone in position.
- Flip and Adjust:
- Turn the wrapped stone over and tighten the knots from the other side.
- Readjust any knots to ensure even spacing and snugness around the stone.
Step 5: Create the Necklace Cord (Optional)
- Create Square Knots:
- Take the base cords and tie a series of square knots around them:
- From one side: Under, over, through.
- From the other side: Under, over, through.
- Continue knotting until you reach your desired length.
- Take the base cords and tie a series of square knots around them:
- Seal the Ends:
- Snip off the inner ends gently and melt them with a lighter to avoid fraying.
- Use caution to avoid burning yourself or the working thread.
- Create a Loop:
- Fold the remaining knotted cord to form a loop.
- Use a needle to tuck the ends through and secure the loop into place.
- Tie a final knot to secure the loop and trim off excess cords. Seal the ends with a lighter.
Step 6: Final Adjustments
- Check the Fit:
- Ensure the wrapped stone is securely in its holder.
- Adjust any loose knots or edges.
- Optional: Add a Necklace Cord:
- Attach your created macramé gemstone to a necklace cord or chain.
