Required Materials

Here is the list of materials needed to create the Valentine Fake Bake Cake:

Base of the Cake

  • 6 Styrofoam rounds (from Dollar Tree, 2 in a pack)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Shish kebab stick or wooden dowel (to stabilize)

“Frosting” and Decorations

  • Spackle (from Dollar Tree, mixed with a little paint and water for desired color)
  • Acrylic paint: FolkArt “Baby Pink” (or your preferred shade)
  • Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint (“Diamond” or glitter variant)
  • Glitter
  • Foam beads (Dollar Tree)
  • Decorative sprinkles or confetti
  • Frosting piping bag with 1M tip for details

Decor Items

  • Mini toy decorations or figurines (found at Dollar Tree or other stores)
  • Salt dough ornament or pre-made clay decoration
  • Silicone molds for hot glue decorations (optional)
  • Cupcake picks with hearts or other Valentine motifs
  • Scrapbooking decorations (e.g., cardstock hearts/keys)
  • Marshmallow made from air-dry or polymer clay (optional)

Other Tools

  • Pencils (for marking)
  • Small paintbrush
  • Scissors (for cutting straws and sticks)
  • Toothpicks
  • Glitter adhesive (can use hairspray or Tulip Dimensional Paint as adhesive)
  • Optional molds for hot glue shapes

Important Notes

  • Glue Placement: When gluing the Styrofoam rounds together, avoid adding glue to the center. This makes it easier to insert decorative picks or skewers later.
  • Spackle Consistency: Adjust spackle consistency with paint and water. It can be thick, but should be easy to apply. If too dry, spray a little water.
  • Drying Time: Allow time for your spackle layer to dry before adding glitter or proceeding with decorations.
  • Adhesive Options: Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint doubles as both adhesive and glitter medium.
  • Styrofoam Quality: Dollar Tree Styrofoam rounds may vary in size or quality, but irregularities will be hidden under the spackle “frosting.”
  • Experiment Freely: Customization makes your cake unique, so feel free to adjust colors, design, and decorations!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Create the Cake Base

  1. Gather 6 Styrofoam rounds. Glue them together using a hot glue gun. Only apply glue on the edges—leave the center glue-free for later decoration.
  2. Insert a shish kebab stick or wooden dowel into the middle to stabilize the layers while working.

Apply the “Frosting”

  1. Prepare your spackle mixture by adding acrylic paint and a few drops of water to achieve your desired color and consistency.
  2. Use a spatula or spoon to begin applying the spackle in thick layers onto the sides of the Styrofoam.
  3. Smooth the spackle around the sides and create faint vertical lines for texture, mimicking the look of frosting. For the top, you can either smooth it completely or swirl for a decorative effect.
  4. Let the “frosting” dry until it’s no longer sticky to the touch.

Add Glitter and Base Details

  1. Once dry, brush the surface with Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint or hairspray. Sprinkle fine glitter to add shimmer.
  2. Press foam beads or sprinkles into gaps or areas where additional detail is needed.

Decorate the Cake

  1. Identify the front-facing “best side” of the cake for decoration.
  2. Begin placing decorative elements such as toys, clay candies, molds, or festive cupcake picks:
    • Center a main piece (e.g., a toy donut or salt dough heart).
    • Add side decorations like cute cupcakes, marshmallows, or bows. Use toothpicks or straws trimmed to size for support.
  3. Use a piping bag with a 1M tip to pipe “frosting flowers” around the base or edges of the cake. Add mini foam beads or sprinkles in the center of each flower.
  4. Add embellishments like hearts or keys with hot glue or toothpicks.

Final Touches

  1. Inspect the cake for any gaps or areas needing additional sprinkles or glitter. Fill as needed.
  2. Once all elements are in place, set the cake aside to dry completely before display.

Optional Extras

  • DIY Hot Glue Molds: Use silicone molds to create small decorations by pouring hot glue. Once cooled, remove the design, paint it, and add glitter for extra flair.
  • Custom Marshmallows or Clay Decor: Sculpt small items out of polymer or air-dry clay and decorate with slick paint and beads before adding to your cake.

Finished Cake

Once completed, this beautiful and customizable Valentine Fake Bake Cake will serve as the perfect, whimsical DIY display piece. Customize it further with different themes, colors, or toppers.
