Step 1: Establish the Diagonal Base Creases
Begin by laying your square origami paper flat on a surface with the colored side facing down. Fold the paper diagonally in half by bringing one corner up to meet the opposite diagonal corner.
Crease the fold firmly from center to edges, then unfold the paper completely. Rotate the paper 90 degrees and repeat this process across the second diagonal, bringing the remaining two corners together. Unfold the paper once more. You should now have a distinct “X” shaped crease intersecting directly at the center of the sheet.
Step 2: Form the Symmetrical Kite Folds
With the paper laid flat in a diamond orientation, take the bottom-left edge and align it with the central diagonal crease line, pressing down to form a smooth fold. Repeat this action with the bottom-right edge so that both lower edges meet neatly at the center line, forming a narrow kite shape. Open both folds back up completely. Turn the paper and fold the top-left and top-right edges into the central line using the exact same technique, then unfold them as well. These intersecting crease guidelines will serve as the structure for the collapsing steps.
Step 3: Collapse and Squash into the Base Diamond
Gather the outer edges along the pre-made diagonal guidelines you created in Step 2. Gently push the side folds toward the center line while collapsing the excess paper at the top and bottom into flattened triangular pockets. Press the entire model flat to form a clean, multi-layered kite structure. Take the top sharp triangular point and fold it straight down along the horizontal central fold line. Turn the entire model over to the back side.
Step 4: Fold and Position the Ghost’s Arms
Working on the reverse side, fold the left and right vertical edges inward toward the center crease to narrow the body structure. Reach underneath the folded edges to locate the triangular paper flaps stored on each side. Carefully swing these flaps outward at an downward diagonal angle, flattening the base of each fold so the points project outward beyond the sides of the body. Make a small reverse tuck or secondary crease at the base of each arm flap to securely lock them into position pointing sideways.
Step 5: Round the Head and Curve the Tail
To soften the head profile, take the sharp top point of the ghost and fold it backward approximately 0.5 cm. Fold the sharp upper-left and upper-right shoulder corners backward diagonally as well to create a rounded, dome-like crown for the head. Next, move down to the bottom pointed tip of the body. Make a small diagonal pleat or zigzag fold near the bottom end, pressing the tip toward the left or right side.
This gives the bottom tip a curved, wavy appearance, creating the illusion of a floating ghost tail.
