How to Make Toilet Roll Angels and Snowflakes for Christmas
Looking for a fun and creative way to make holiday decorations? Toilet roll angels and snowflakes are simple, beautiful, and perfect for adding a handmade touch. These decorations are made entirely from everyday materials like toilet rolls, making them both unique and sustainable for the festive season. Use them as Christmas tree ornaments, hang them in garlands, or display them on shelves. Their charm lies in their simplicity, making them ideal for children and adults alike to enjoy creating together.
To make the angel, you’ll cut toilet rolls into pieces, glue them together, and shape them to resemble wings, a body, and a cute round head. Add a star or some glitter for decoration to give it that festive sparkle. For the snowflake, fold and glue pieces of toilet rolls into shapes, layering them to form intricate designs. These can be painted, glittered, or left plain for a natural look. The process is relaxing and perfect for spreading holiday cheer. No fancy supplies are required, so it’s easy to make with family or as a quiet activity on your own.

Materials & Tools Needed
For Both Angel and Snowflake:
- 5 toilet rolls (cardboard cores)
- Glue gun (or PVA glue/child-safe glue)
- Small decorative stars or embellishments
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil or marker (for marking measurements)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Toilet Roll Angel
Step 1: Prepare Toilet Roll Pieces
- Start with two toilet rolls (10 cm long each).
- Flatten the rolls to make them easier to cut.
- Using a ruler and marker, measure and mark 1.6 cm sections along the length of each roll.
- Cut each roll into six pieces, yielding a total of 12 pieces.
Step 2: Create the Wings and Body
- Take four pieces and glue them together at the top using a glue gun:
- Apply a small blob of glue at the top of each section.
- Join the pieces at their narrow ends, forming a 4-pointed shape.
- Take another three pieces and pinch them in half to create folds.
- Glue these three folded pieces together, stacking them on top of one another to create a layered effect.
- Attach this folded group on top of the previously made 4-pointed shape (these form the wings and upper body).
Step 3: Make the Angel’s Head
- Take another one of the 12 pieces and cut it slightly over halfway along its length.
- Roll this shorter piece back into a circular shape and glue it closed.
- Attach this piece to the top of the assembled toilet roll structure (this forms the angel’s head).
Step 4: Add Decorations
- Find a small decorative star.
- Glue the star onto the angel for a finishing touch (e.g., on her “head” as a halo or around her body).
Step 5: Customize and Use
- Optionally, add glitter, spray paint, or other embellishments.
- Attach a string to use as a hanging ornament.
Toilet Roll Snowflake
Step 1: Prepare Snowflake Pieces
- Take one toilet roll.
- Flatten it for easier cutting.
- Cut it into six equal pieces (approximately 1.6 cm wide).
Step 2: Assemble the Base
- Make one end of each piece slightly pointy using scissors.
- Take these six pieces and glue the flat ends together to form the base structure of the snowflake.
Step 3: Add Interior Layers
- Cut another three toilet rolls into six equal pieces each (totaling 18 additional pieces).
- Depending on the quality of the rolls, some may unravel; re-glue as needed.
- Fold six pieces in half lengthwise to create V-shaped sections.
- Add these folded pieces into the design by gluing them into the spaces between the arms of the snowflake.
- Repeat this process for the next six pieces, creating an additional interior layer.
Step 4: Final Flourishes
- From the remaining cut sections, fold 12 more pieces in half and glue two halves together at the center.
- Add these double-folded pieces into the remaining spaces of the snowflake design to complete the look.
Step 5: Customize and Finish
- Add a star, glitter, or spray paint the snowflake for extra decoration.
- Attach a string for hanging, or turn it into a garland piece as desired.
Additional Tips (from the tutorial’s details):
- Crafting Quality: Higher-quality toilet rolls yield smoother results, but even with lower-quality rolls, you can achieve a beautiful outcome.
- Child-Safe Craft: This is a great activity for children, especially using child-safe glue.
