How To Make Paper Bookmarks

Materials Needed:

  1. Wide tape (5 cm or 50 mm wide works well).
  2. Scissors.
  3. Hole punch.
  4. String, yarn, or ribbon.
  5. Assorted papers (scrap papers, old book pages, comic strips, music sheets, etc.).

Gather Your Materials

  • Collect all the materials listed above.
  • Choose papers that are colorful, patterned, or have interesting designs on both sides (double-sided patterns work best for this craft).

Cut the Tape

  1. Decide the desired length of your bookmark.
  2. Cut a strip of tape that is twice the length of your bookmark. (No need to measure precisely—eyeballing works fine.)
  3. Lay the tape flat and sticky side up on your workspace.

Prepare Paper Strips

  1. Select the papers you want to use.
  2. Tear the papers into long, thin strips. Tip: Torn, uneven edges give the bookmark a more artistic and fun look. Avoid using strips that are too wide, as they might be harder to work with.
  3. Make a small pile of these strips, ensuring you have enough to cover the bookmark.

Stick Paper Strips to the Tape

  1. Start placing the paper strips along one side of the tape.
  2. Overlap the strips slightly as you go to cover any gaps.
  3. Continue until you cover half the length of the tape. (This is the first side of the bookmark.)
    • Tip: Using double-sided paper ensures the backside of the bookmark has interesting visuals as well.

Fold the Tape Over

  1. Carefully fold the other half of the tape over the papers, pressing down gently to stick both sides together.
  2. This step essentially “laminates” the paper strips, protecting them and giving your bookmark a smooth finish.

  1. Smooth out any bumps or air bubbles.

Trim and Perfect the Edges

  1. Use scissors to trim the excess tape around the edges of the bookmark.
  2. Optionally, round the corners of the bookmark for a polished look. Simply snip the corners gently to create a rounded effect.

Add a Hole and Tassel

  1. Use a hole punch to create a hole near the top of the bookmark. Make sure it’s far enough from the edge to prevent tearing.
  2. Cut a piece of string or yarn to your preferred length.
  3. Thread the string through the hole. Loop it and tie it securely to create a tassel.

Final Touches

  • Admire your beautiful handcrafted bookmark! You can personalize it for a friend, teacher, or book lover.
  • Try different themes: use music sheets for a music lover, comic strips for a fun vibe, or classic book page clippings for a literary aesthetic.

Optional Variations

  • Use colored tape for a vibrant background.
  • Try shaped hole punches for the tassel hole, like hearts or stars.
  • Embellish the bookmark with stickers, stamps, or small decorations (optional).

Completed Bookmark

Congratulations! You’ve created a lovely, easy, and eco-friendly bookmark. Make more to give as thoughtful gifts or for your reading collection.
