Required Materials

  1. Plastic medallion ornament (or a round ornament as an alternative)
  2. White paint
  3. USA-themed napkin (or any Fourth of July design napkin)
  4. Water pen (or scissors, if preferred)
  5. Decoupage glue
  6. Metallic silver paint
  7. Dabber (for applying paint)
  8. Pouring glaze
  9. Ribbon for a bow
  10. Hot glue gun
  11. Glitter star

Important Notes

  • The plastic medallion ornament works better for this design due to its flat surface, but a round ornament could work as well.
  • For easier napkin cutting, use a water pen. Scissors can also be used, but edges may be sharp and less suitable for blending.
  • Let each layer of paint, glue, or glaze thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.
  • Be cautious while using the hot glue gun to avoid burns.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ornament

  1. Take a plastic medallion ornament and paint it with two layers of white paint.
  2. Allow the paint to dry completely between each layer.

Step 2: Prepare the Napkin

  1. Use a USA-themed napkin for the design.
  2. Trace around the napkin design using a water pen to make cutting or tearing easier.
    • Alternatively, use scissors, but the creator prefers a water pen for better blending and softer edges.
  3. Tear the napkin into smaller pieces to allow better placement over the ornament.

Step 3: Apply the Napkin

  1. Apply a thin layer of decoupage glue to the surface of the ornament.
    • Use just a little glue to avoid oversaturation.
  2. Carefully place the napkin pieces onto the ornament.
    • Start gluing from the center of the napkin outwards to the edges.
    • Focus on covering one side of the ornament, stopping where the ornament’s halves are sealed.
  3. Apply a generous amount of decoupage glue on top of the napkin to secure it fully.
  4. Let the ornament dry completely.

Step 4: Add Metallic Details

  1. Using a dabber, apply a bit of metallic silver paint around the edges of the ornament.
  2. Allow the paint to dry before proceeding.

Step 5: Apply the Glaze

  1. Apply a coat of pouring glaze for a shiny, polished look.
  2. Repeat by adding 3 to 4 layers of glaze, allowing it to dry completely between each layer.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches

  1. Create a nice bow using ribbon and secure it with a hot glue gun to the top of the ornament.
  2. Be careful not to burn yourself when using the glue gun.
  3. Attach a small glitter star to the ornament as an additional decoration.

Final Steps

  • Once all components are glued and dried, your 4th of July DIY ornament is complete!
  • Use it as a decoration or a gift for the holiday season.
